  Dining Overview

Foods:

Like much of the rest of Hebei, dishes in Shijiazhuang are a little saltier than the nations average. Dishes here tend to be an integration of cuisines from across China. One style that is said to distinguish the Shijiazhuang cuisine, is the chefs adroit knife skills, shown in the many courses of the Hebei banquets, notably the cucumber banquet (Huanggua yanhui), and in the famous Chrysanthemum-shaped sleeve fish, which is as close as the area comes to producing its own dishes. Gaocheng Palace Noodles, Yanchunlou Dishes and Hui's Braised Chicken are also famous food items.

Food Areas and Restaurants:

The Yanchun Restaurant (Yanchun fandian), on Zhongshan donglu, is the best place to go for local dishes.

The Shanghai Tan Restaurant (Shanghaitan dafandian), on Guang'an jie, serves authentic Shanghai cuisine.

Other restaurants good for dinner with acceptable price:
Silver Spring Restaruant  (Yinquan Jiujia), south of the train station.

Red Star Restaruant (Hong Xing Fan Zhuang), west of Hebei Provincial Museum.

Lv Liu Ju Restaurant (1F Commerce Hall 42 Ping An Nan Da Jie )
Originated from Nanjing in 1912, branch set up in Shijiazhuang in 2003, famous for its vegetarian food including Four Treasure of Plant, Colorful Prawn, Moon Dove Egg, Emerald Bread, Maigre Shark Fin, Maigre Duck, Maigre Chicken and some kinds of maigre dumpling and snacks.

At the Yong'an Market (Yong'an shichang), at 12 Zhanqian jie, has many restaurants and small stalls serving regional and countrywide dishes. Good for those on a budget.

For those on a serious budget, or who have arrived famished after a late train, there are food stalls around the railway station. Dongdong Wonton, just opposite the train station, delicious wonton with attractive price.

The areas around the Teacher's University (Shifan daxue), on the eastern side of town, have numerous cheap restaurants and stalls, especially on Yuhua lu and within the campus.

Other recommended small restaurants:
Polaris Restaurant (Bei Dou Xing Can Ting), Baoding flavor, Jianhua Ave.
Mouth-opening Dumpling (Kai Kou Jiaozi), east of Hua Yao Mansion.
