Located in Nanshan district to the west of the downtown and covering an area of 490.000 square meters, Zhongshan Park, the oldest park in Shenzhen, is the only park in memory of Dr Sun Yat-sen, a great Chinese revolutionist in the early of this century. It was originally built in 1925 when Dr Sun died in March that year, and had a history of 70 years. The undulate hills and dense forests form 14 scenic spots in the park, which becomes a resort for leisure and entertainment with the blend of modern and traditional atmosphere.
Ten meters high and 27 meters wide, it is the largest bust of Dr Sun in the world, designed by noted sculptor Qian Shaowu. Solemn, profound, resolute and courageous, Dr Sun, backed by the boundless green of Nanshan Mountain, is staring at the peaceful and beautiful land gained with the blood and life of numerous revolutionaries.
Around Dr Sun's bust are statues of revolutionaries. Their firm faces and gestures vividly mirror the fierce fighting then.
Behind the sculpture are undulating hills covered with jade-green trees for as far as the eye can see. Nearby is a 30,000sqm artificial lake with pavilions dotted here and there. Visitors can enjoy themselves to their hearts' content by fishing from the island in the center of the lake or tasting tea in the teahouse on the bank.
Walking ahead along a zigzag path, there is a simple archway of distinctive Chinese traditional architectural flavor. It is the east gate of the park. When night falls, the 3,700sqm square in front of the gate is a sea of colorful lights.
