Huangling Temple
Huangling Temple is the oldest example of classical Chinese architecture in the three gorges region, originally built in about 500BC. Numerous renovations have taken place at the site, and the current structure built in the later part of the Ming Dynasty(early 17th century). The Temple was built to commemorate a legendary figure in Chinese history-Dayu- who locals attribute with being largely responsible for the water irrigation system in the area. The the main structure here contains a statue dedicated to the national hero.
Before the huge water conservatory projects along here began, the region was frequently affected by heavy floods and the pillars in the main hall here detail the water levels in the area across the years.
