On the west bank of the Li River, 43km from Guilin, a 400-meter-high hill soars steeply into the clouds with a huge precipice of naked rocks overhanging the river, obstructing the torrential southward river. It is the famous spot Half-side Ferry.

On each side of the hill, there is a village. These unique villages are Crown Cave village and Taoyuan village. Obstructed by the hill, the come-and-go between Crown Cave and Taoyuan villages depends entirely on ferryboat. Different from other ferries, the ferries of these two villages are on the same side of the river, instead of opposite sides. Hence the name Half-side Ferry. Visitors arrive here and all marvel at the ruggedness and steepness of the countryside and the rarest of the world's ferries.
