The city has a history of some 3,000 years. In the late Ming
and early Qing dynasties, Wuxi was famous as a rice market and a
cloth dock in China, with a developed economy. Since the 20th century,
Wuxi has become much famous for its industry and trade and come
to be known as Lesser Shanghai.
Wuxi is rich in tourist commodities including clay figurines,
dark red earthen tea sets from Yixing, freshwater pearl objects,
silk embroidery and porcelain cooking utensils.
