Mt. Xumi Grottoes lying at the eastern foot of Mt. Xumi 55 kilometers northwest of Guyuan County is a gateway on the ancient Silk Road. The carving began in the late Northern Wei period (386-534). Twenty-two grottoes are well preserved, with a rich collection of fine-quality carvings of the Northern Wei, the Northern Zhou, the Sui, and the Tang times. It is a treasure house of the art of grottoes in China.
