Like its desserts, Guangdong
snacks also have a long history, such as Fruitcake,
Glutinous Rice Dumpling Wrapped in Bamboo Leaves and
Crisp Thin Cake that enjoy long-standing fame. Apart
from various porridges, snacks include fried rice and
flour-based foods, such as salty Deep-Fried Dough Sticks,
sweet Sugar Cake, Jujube and Crisp Dough Twists, and
salty-sweet Baked Thin Cake. These snacks are offered
all year round, especially in winter. Usually these
are eaten together with porridges.
Staples
Deep-Fried Dough Sticks, Noodles,
Wontons and Watery Cakes are all popular. Wontons,
which have a long history in Guangdong, are often
eaten together with noodles.
Cakes and Vermicelli
The famous ones include Lunjiao
Cake, Mushy Cake and Cotton Cake. Lunjiao Cake was
named after the town of Lunjiao and is now known all
over the country and even in Southeast Asia. Famous
rich noodles are Rice Flour Sheet with Stuffed Filling,
Shahe Vermicelli and Lai Vermicelli. The stuffing
of Rice Flour Sheet may vary, and its specific name
changes accordingly.
